Hello! I’m Sergio, and it's pleasure to “meet" you all. I’m a first generation-Italian (my parents emigrated from Naples, Italy) and I was born in Queens and raised in Madison, NJ.
I’m a true product of the 80s. Z-100!! Love the music, and yes, I wore a Member's Only jacket, Sergio Valente jeans, and white Adidas. And parachute pants.
A big fan of 80s music and movies: Duran Duran, Rick Springfield, Debarge. Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Risky Business, etc. I like also Depeche Mode and Dead Can Dance, Alice in Chains and Metallica, Dave Matthews. Movies: Breaking Away, Night of the Comet, Tommy, and the classic horror flicks: Rosemary's Baby, Carrie, Children of the Corn, Hellraiser.
Many books to list. Just a sample: Geek Love, Bleak House, A Happy Death, The Trial. And lots of philosophical works.
Needless to say, as an observant and wildly curious child, I’ve learned much from the kaleidoscopic and harlequinesque aura that constituted the ethos of traditional Italian life. Storytelling is now in my blood.
I perceive reality rather obliquely, never straight on or directly, for there is always an excess of meaning concealed within the interstices. If you ever find yourself stuck in a malaise, caught in sleepy ennui, disenchanted or disillusioned, set your eyes on those things residing between, behind, around, and underneath the common path. Meditate on these. Be receptive to otherness. Such is the source of the world's enchantment and the beauty in all things:
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin: “Nothing here below is profane for those who know how to see."
Let me say at the outset: I’m an eclectic individual, fiercely creative, with an imagination that is intensely fertile. Passionate and soulful….Touch and subtle embraces are significant to me. A poet and philosopher (I taught philosophy years ago). My poets are my confidants. Be it Nietzsche, Hafiz, Rilke, Pablo Neruda, Emily Dickenson, Whitman, Wordsworth, or Thich Nhat Hanh.
I enlisted in the Navy in 1991 and was stationed at Norfolk on a destroyer, the USS Scott. This said, I've visited many places and have been exposed to many different cultures—quite heterogeneous and diverse: Valencia, Marseilles, Trieste, Alexandria, Cairo, Naples, Sicily, Volos and Athens, Greece, Bulgaria and Rumania. Also Puerto Rico and Ft. Lauderdale. My experiences here have been nothing short of enchanting.
What do I like to do??
I write, paint, doodle, sculpt, drink coffee, and dream deep thoughts. Again, a hopeless romantic. I suppose many lonely days sailing across the middle of Atlantic Ocean is responsible for this. I lived the stereotype: snuggled in my peacoat, a drag of a cigarette, a sip of strong black coffee, and staring out into the blue-gray expanse as I inhale the sharp saline mists. (FYI: I quit smoking a long time ago😁).
I can be very creative--the type who will make you jewelry boxes made of cedar, the contents of which will always consist of my dreams, wishes, desires, and a few glittering stars. I thrive on simple wonder, trying to recover the lost fragments of childhood consciousness--the kind that perceives the world through pinwheels and masks.
I'm also a very sensual person.
Baudelaire’s “The Cat" comes to mind:
"When my fingers leisurely caress you, your head and your elastic back, and when my hand tingles with the pleasure of feeling your electric body…"
Perhaps my Italian sensibility is responsible for this.
I enjoy the simple, discrete things. Crisp Autumnal mornings, ice-cold drafts at a hole in the wall bar with a jukebox, the subtle caress of another. A subtle waft of perfume. Kisses. A bench with shade. A good book. A songbird. A slumbering cat.
Thanks for reading….
Peace, Sergio
